Measuring Musical Rhythm Similarity: Further Experiments with the Many-to-Many Minimum-Weight Matching Distance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Musical rhythms are represented as sequences of symbols. The sequences may be composed of binary symbols denoting either silent or monophonic sounded pulses, or ternary symbols denoting silent pulses and two types of sounded pulses made up of low-pitched (dum) and high-pitched (tak) sounds. Experiments are described that compare the effectiveness of the many-to-many minimum-weight matching between two sequences to serve as a measure of similarity that correlates well with human judgements of rhythm similarity. This measure is also compared to the often used edit distance and to the one-to-one minimum-weight matching. New results are reported from experiments performed with three widely different datasets of realworld and artificially generated musical rhythms (including Afro-Cuban rhythms), and compared with results previously reported with a dataset of Middle Eastern dum-tak rhythms.

Measuring Musical Rhythm Similarity: Edit Distance versus Minimum-Weight Many-to-Many Matchings
Musical rhythms are represented as binary symbol sequences of sounded and silent pulses of unit-duration. A measure of distance (dissimilarity) between a pair of rhythms commonly used in music information retrieval, music perception, and musicology is the edit (Levenshtein) distance, defined as the minimum number of symbol insertions, deletions, and substitutions needed to transform one rhythm ...
متن کاملMeasuring the Similarity of Trajectories Using Fuzzy Theory
In recent years, with the advancement of positioning systems, access to a large amount of movement data is provided. Among the methods of discovering knowledge from this type of data is to measure the similarity of trajectories resulting from the movement of objects. Similarity measurement has also been used in other data mining methods such as classification and clustering and is currently, an...

In traditional architecture, the adherence of architects to the rules and proportions in numbers, geometry and music is present in designing and shaping many public monuments, and mathematical proportions, artistic ratios, or musical proportions are used in geometry of these buildings. Extracting and matching mathematical rules and proportions and examining them in the architecture of the tradi...
متن کاملOptimizations of Local Edition for Evaluating Similarity Between Monophonic Musical Sequences
Melody is an important property for the perceptual description of Western musical pieces. In the monophonic context, retrieval systems based on melodic similarity generally consider sequences of pitches and durations. Algorithms that have been proposed for measuring melodic similarity rely on geometric representations, string matching techniques, etc. Adaptations of edit distance based algorith...
متن کاملMinimum Many to Many Matchings for Computing the Distance Between Two Sequences
Motivated by a problem in music theory of measuring the distance between chords and scales we consider algorithms for obtaining a minimum-weight many-to-many matching between two sets of points on the real line. Given sets A and B, we want to find the best rigid translation of B and a many-to-many matching that minimizes the sum of the squares of the distances between matched points. We provide...
